Be wary of suspicious links, Aussies told

Australians are being urged to look out for suspicious messages sent by text or online as criminals find new ways to scam people.

Unsolicited links sent by SMS, video links on social media and emails from unknown contacts are becoming a common tools of attack, according to the Minister assisting the Prime Minister for Cyber Security Dan Tehan.

“These messages are designed to look legitimate but if you click on a fraudulent link you can download malware to your computer leaving yourself open to the theft of your personal information,” he said on Tuesday to mark Safer Internet Day.

He suggested taking a moment to think before responding or clicking links, or talking about it with others who might help identify it as a scam.

Australians reported losing over $81 million to internet fraud in 2016.
